Local Area: The Royal Exchange is situated at the heart of the City of London, in the famous financial district. It is located next to the Bank of England, The Lord Mayor's Mansion House and in sight of the Lloyd's Building. The architecture in the vicinity is beautiful, of which The Royal Exchange itself is a jewel. The original Stock Exchange on the site was first built in 1565. Queen Elizabeth I gave it the Royal Title in 1571. Alas it was destroyed in 1666 in the Great Fire of London, along with vast swathes of the capital. A year later, the rebuilding of it commenced, and the foundation stone was laid by Charles II no less! Yet again the building was destroyed by fire in 1838. By 1844 the third Royal Exchange building had been completed, with Queen Victoria declaring it open. Prince Albert had laid the foundation stone two years earlier. During World War II, the Royal Exchange was remarkably left unharmed. While trading had ceased, it hosted in its courtyard two Shakespeare performances in 1953 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's coronation. It was refurbished in 1991 and 2001 and became a luxury shopping destination that is unrivalled in the City for its glamour. There are some marvellous restaurants, including the Grand Cafe, and a Mezzanine Bar in the Inner Courtyard. The Royal Exchange has a stellar selection of boutiques; come and spend a wonderful calm shopping experience in the ultimate style.
