Hat Care

TWEED

Our tweed hats are wool yarn, woven together to create a luxurious cap for hunting or simply lazing in front of the fire. Among the Tweeds we stock, we include Lovat; Harris and Donegal. To keep it in prime condition, we recommend you store in a cool and dry environment. If folding is needed, make sure the hat is folded in on itself. If staining occurs, use steam from a kettle or a little lighter fluid (not too much) to dab dry. If mud gets onto the cap then use a bristle hat brush to brush off once dry – important not to do when wet as this could create staining inside the yarn. All our Tweed’s are shower proof.

FURFELT

Each Furfelt hat we make is made from the highest qulaity of rabbit forfeit. The benefits of Rabbit fur in hat making are among others:Good in the rain; robust; will last for years. If looked after properly, your Laird Rabbit Furfelt hat should last for years – And with a few tips, this is almost guaranteedIf the hat becomes muddy, it is important not to attempt to clean when still wet, rather wait until it is dry and use a Horse hair hat brush to wipe away the dirt – If there is still slight marks, use a slightly damp sponge and dap until clean and leave to dry naturally.Always store in a cool, dry area – Above a wardrobe or in a hatbox is ideal – This helps keep the shape for longer and maintain the finish of the fur.

WOOLFELT

Much like Furfelt, Woolfelt is made in a very similar way, being a robust and warm edition to the hat family. The wool we use is lambswool felt, double layered and with or without a lining.Wool felt is a slightly less expensive fabric to produce yet has very similar benefits to Furfelt, being good in some rain and sturdy to the extreme.Again as with furfelt, if the hat becomes muddy, it is important not to attempt to clean when still wet, rather wait until it is dry and use a Horse hair hat brush to wipe away the dirt – If there is still slight marks, use a slightly damp sponge and dap until clean and leave to dry naturally.Always store in a cool, dry area – Above a wardrobe or in a hatbox.

LINEN/COTTON

Our Linen and Cotton hats are beautiful fabrics, woven to create a light yet strong cap for relaxing in the sun or even on a cooler day. As with any cap however, it needs a little love to help it last as long as possible! To keep it in prime condition, we recommend you store in a cool and dry environment. If folding is needed, make sure the hat is folded in on itself, much like any other cap. Refrain from long periods like this to be safe.If staining occurs, one can hand wash, much like thinner wools – if really ingrained dirt/staining a COLD wash can be used – if unsure please check with one of our staff members.

LEATHER

Leather & SuedeLeather is a durable material, having been used for centuries in clothing as well as headwear. But like any fabric, it needs some care to help give it a long and prosperous life!Once purchased, store in a cool dry environment and avoid excessive exposure to the sun, which could bleach or crack the leather. If heavy staining occurs, wait until dry and brush off – Alternatively using a little suede shampoo and a sponge with warm water. Most leather is shower proof but if further water resistance is required, then use of a leather silicone based spray will weather seal it completely.

PANAMA

Each Panama hat is handmade from toquilla palm and is therefore delicate. However, with the correct care and storage it should last for a long time.If the hat becomes muddy, it is important not to attempt to clean when still wet, rather wait until it is dry and use a bristle hat brush to wipe away the dirt – If there is still slight marks, use a slightly damp sponge and dap until clean and leave to dry naturally.Always store in a cool, dry area – with the roll-able Panama, we advise only store in a ‘rolled’ position for travelling – once arrived, unroll and keep as normal. To travel with a non-rollable: simply place upside down in your case, put some clothing inside to pad and pack around it.
